Notes: Daily Telegraph 24 November 1880, p.2 col.5, carried a story on the strange case of the high informal vote. The report stated that 60 ballots had all names crossed out but had the words 'I Vote for Taylor' written across the ballot. These ballots were declared informal, the Telegraph making the point that had these been allowed, Taylor would have defeated Garrard.
