Notes: WC Windeyer was a sitting MP for Lower Hunter. Sitting MP James Pemell did not re-contest. James Martin had been defeated a few days earlier in East Sydney. Note there was a detailed breakdown of the vote published by the Returning Officer, SMH 20 December, p.4 col.4. This derives the total number of persons voting by starting with the roll figure, subtracting 2,139 non-voters, then around 167 informal votes and 532 duplicate votes. Calculation of turnout was obviously a more complex process in 1860.
