NSW students shine light on respectful relationships in new art exhibition

See visions, hopes and experiences of respectful and positive relationships through the eyes of young people in a powerful new exhibition currently on display in the Fountain Court of NSW Parliament House.

Featuring artworks and poetry by public school students from Broken Hill to Hornsby, Lake Illawarra to Fairfield, the Every Step Counts exhibition is free to visit and showcases more than 90 works exploring their understanding of domestic violence, respectful relationships and gender equality.

A NSW Department of Education initiative, the project invited primary and secondary public school students to creatively engage with a variety of social issues that touch their lives – from relationships to social media, positive self-image to consent – backed by relevant professional learning for teachers involved in the program.

“This exhibition is not so much about what public education students know about respectful relationships but more about how they truly feel about issues of domestic violence, consent, gender equality and more. And as adults we must listen. This is what this exhibition is about and why it’s so important,” says project coordinator Dale Palmer.

Through a remarkably diverse range of artistic media, each work harnesses the incredible power of art, colour and words to distil often difficult themes into images that make us pause and reflect. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the world of relationships and self-image through the eyes of these talented young people.

Leader of the Opposition Mark Speakman MP is honoured to be hosting the exhibition at Parliament House.
