Educated privately at Muswellbrook; started the Aberdeen Angus stud on Edinglassie in 1880; went into partnership with brother 1886-1908, owning properties in Northern Territory, central Queensland and New South Wales; foundation member of Aberdeen Angus Society in 1919; chairman of Denman Pastures Protection Board; president of Muswellbrook Hospital and Upper Hunter Pastoral and Agricultural Association; councillor of Royal Agricultural Society and judge of cattle; councilor of Horsebreeders' Association; during the war donated two planes to the Royal Australian Air Force; councillor of Graziers' Association 1918-1925.
