Qualifications, occupations and interests
Public servant and soldier. Educated at West Maitland under Reverend W.K Colyer and Dr Boyd; entered the office of William Briggs, solicitor, Maitland; clerk in Newcastle post office in 1876, assistant postmaster from 1876 - 1880, postmaster at Newcastle from 1880 - 1882; crown lands agent at Coonabarabran from 1882 - 1888, resigned; returned to Maitland, farmer and grazier.
Military Service
Subaltern with New South Wales Lancers, served in South African war, Captain in the Inniskillings, three times mentioned in despatches; later with Hunter River Lancers and the Australian Light Horse, Major, Sea Transport staff 1916-1917, Lieutenant Colonel, Volunteer Officers' Decoration; president at Maitland School of Arts 1907-1913.
