Left Germany to avoid military service. Arrived in New South Wales on 12 August 1858. Went to goldfields from 1859 -1860. Supported himself with other jobs. By 1868 was a licensee of the All Nations Hotel. Floated Star of Hope Gold Mining Company in 1872 which founded the largest known specimen of reef gold. Retired and built a mansion at St Leonards in Sydney. Invested in Sydney real estate. Advocate of North Shore Bridge.
