Qualifications, occupations and interests
Journalist. Arrived in Australia in 1853; went to the goldfields, then worked on father's farm in Lancefield district in Victoria; went to England in 1861 seeking a literary opening, returned in 1863, joined reporting staff of the Melbourne Argus. Sent to Ceylon as a telegraphic representative, sub editor and editor; moved to Sydney to become leader writer and assistant editor of The Daily Telegraph from 1885 until 1890; became a shareholder but left when editorial staff resigned over policy in 1890 though remaining as a director. Joined the Sydney Morning Herald as an acting editor during 1898 referendum, vigorously supporting federation; visited England in 1899; retired and returned to The Daily Telegraph as an editor from 1901 until 1903; director of Citizens Life Assurance Company; president of Shakespeare Society from 1904 until 1911.

Son of Henry Gullett, stonemason and builder. Married Lucy Willie, journalist, in 1872 and had issue, 4 daughters. Church of England. Burial at Gore Hill cemetery.
