Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Arrived as an assisted immigrant on the "Margaret" on 23 January 1842. Became a labourer / shepherd with George Bowman at 'Archerfield', Singleton. Later he brought out his two younger brothers, George Robert Gill and Samuel Thomas Gill. By 1846 he had started a coaching and mail-run business, which he ran with his brothers until he sold out to Cobb & Co. in December 1870. By 1866 he also held ten squatting runs in New South Wales, including 'Moonbi' and 'Wandoba' stations, near Tamworth. He also owned properties in New England and the Liverpool Plains; and owned town land in Tamworth, Moonbi, Bendemeer and Wallahbadah. Towards the end of his life, he bought land at The Rocks in Sydney, owning two hotels on Argyle Street. His daughter, Mary Jane Gill, married F. J. Gibbes, who was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Eldest son of Jeremiah Gill, merchant, and his wife Mary Jane Gill. Married circa. 1849 to Mary Jane Sherwood and had issue, 3 daughters and 2 sons. His date of birth is recorded in the Gill family Bible, in the possession of a descendant.
