Qualifications, occupations and interests
Lawyer (solicitor). Educated at Reverend Charles P.Burney's School in Greenwich, he entered the legal profession. On 12 November 1831 he was admitted as an attorney in the Court of Common Pleas, Lincoln's Inn. From 1832 until 1841 he was in partnership in Furnival's Inn with John Simpson. Arrived in Melbourne in February 1842, commenced business as a conveyancer, and was admitted as an attorney, solicitor and proctor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales in April 1843. Entered a successful partnership until he became Chief Magistrate. Lay Anglican registrar of the diocese of Melbourne from 13 February 1848 until 18 March 1854. held pastoral holdings in Victoria and was accused of favouring squatting interests in electoral bill debates. Journeyed to England in January 1852, returned to Melbourne in December 1853 and returned permanently to England in March 1854, retiring at Brighton.
