Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Was a pastoralist when he was elected to the old Legislative Council. Settled in the Goulburn district when he was young and had acquired extensive landed property there, including squatting interests. He held 'East Bland Plains', 'Kenu', 'Myali', Mount McPherson', 'Gledswood' (near Narellan) and 'Kippilaw' (near Goulburn). The latter was gained through marriage.

Son of James, a member of the New South Wales Corps, who later became a wine and spirit merchant. Married Elizabeth Margaret Kinghorne on 9 June 1829 in Sydney and had issue, 9 sons. Church of England.
