Farmer. Educated at Tilba Tilba, Wentworth Falls and Kiama public schools, Newington College, The King's School at Sydney, and University of Sydney where he enrolled in Agricultural Science; farmer at Bodalla until 1949, then Wallaga Lake, Tilba Tilba; won prizes for dairy fodder conservation at the Royal Agricultural Society show; director of Bodalla Co-op Dairy Company from 1927, later managing the cheese co-operative.
Military Service
Served in 2nd Australian Imperial Forces (2nd AIF): Armoured Corps 1940 - 1945, Egypt, Cyprus, Middle East and New Guinea and New Britain. Lieutenant.

Member of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. Member of the House of Representatives for Macarthur 1949 - 1972.

Married (2) Thelma Kirkby in 1958. Married (3) Dame Zara Holt, widow of Harold E.Holt, former Prime Minister, on 19 February 1969. Church of England. Had issue 1 son and 1 daughter.
