Engine-driver. At age fifteen was apprenticed to an engineering shop; worked in a timber mill in 1920's was dismissed in 1929 strike; became a crane driver of Sydney Harbour Bridge construction; later became a grocer; became an official of Federated Engine-drivers and Firemen's Association, representative on northern district defence committee during 1917 strike, delegate to the Trades and Labor Council (TLC), president in 1929; delegate to Pan Pacific Trade Union Conference, Vladivostok, and to Red International of Labor Unions, Moscow in 1929.

Son of Sydney Fritz, iron moulder, and Emily Fusly. Married Alice Mary Dolan on 9 April 1921. Funeral at Waverley cemetery from Holy Cross Roman Catholic church, Woollahra.
