Educated in Christ Church at St Laurence School; at age fourteen became a telegraph messenger at Haymarket Post Office; by night study qualified as an accountant, Commonwealth Institute of Accountants in 1918, Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia, diploma for Economics and Commerce, University of Sydney in 1916, Chamber of Commerce prize 1917; chartered accountant in Orange 1919 - 1922, in Sydney with Hungerford Spooner and Company; director of Belmore Property Company Pty Limited, Robert Reid and Company Limited, chairman of directors of The Hub Pty Limited, W.Steel Enterprises Limited and of family company Milner Royd Estates Pty Limited; had a farm at Carcoar and later at Richmond; author in 1936 and 1938; Australia Club.
