Bootmaker, wharf labourer and union secretary. Moved with mother to Melbourne; served an apprenticeship at bootmaking, unemployed after strike; held various jobs; went to South Africa as a seaman, then to New Zealand; coalminer in Dennison Hill, injured; labourer at Petone Meatworks; returned to Australia in 1910, became a wharf labourer, lived in Rozelle, later at Harbord; joined Waterside Workers' Federation; appointed as an organiser in 1918, secretary of Sydney branch from 1931 until 1948; director of Century Newspapers in 1943; boxing trainer until 1924 when G.Mendie killed in the ring.
