Educated at Jamberoo and Kiama public schools; in 1890 went to Richmond River as a manager at the Pearce Creek butter factory; took up land in 1898, dairy farmer, established a Jersey stud; chairman of Lismore Dairy Company; assisted to found Primary Producers' Union, president of Richmond River council; committee member of Australian Jersey Herd Society of New South Wales; moved to Croydon after entering Parliament., leaving management of farms to sons, New South Wales representative on Commonwealth Board of Trade; member of Farmer and Settlers' Association in 1925; supported New State Movement; Freemason.
