Qualifications, occupations and interests
Storekeeper. Educated at Grammar School, Bideford; arrived in Australia c.1878, employed by W and A McArthur Limited, York Street, Sydney., drapers; when father bought out Moore and Company, storekeepers in Armidale c.1889, worked there becoming a managing director on father's death in 1899. President of Armidale Chamber of Commerce in 1904. Director of New England Building Society; member of Farmers and Settlers Association; secretary of Armidale Pastoral and Agricultural Society; treasurer of Free Trade League; keen sportsman, represented New South Wales in 1888 rugby union; teetotaller; theosophist.
Military Service
Joined volunteers, 2nd lieutenant of 4th Infantry Regiment in 1893, 1st lieutenant in 1898, Captain in 1899, Major in 1907, Lieutenant - Colonel in 1913 in command of 13th Infantry; Volunteer Officers Decoration; in comand in 1914 on 2nd Battalion 1st Infantry Brigade which suffered heavy losses in the first days of Gallipoli landing; Braund in person led a bayonet attack on 27 April and was shot by own sentry on 4th May apparently having failed to hear the challenge.
