Miner and union official. Started in mines at fourteen years of age. Wallsend and Co-op Collieries; represented Wallsend Lodge on the District Board from 1903, secretary of the Northern District Miners' Federation from 1908 until 1927, foundation member of the Council of Australian Coal and Shale Employees Federation in 1915; executive member of Newcastle Labor Council (TLC); convicted of conspiracy in 1909 strike and served three months in Bathurst gaol; employed as a storeman after 1927 and was later a clerk.
