Station Manager. Visited England at age 5. Educated at Bexley Place near Deptford from 1824 until 1825. Sailed as midshipman from 1831 becoming a life long friend of Charles Darwin. Returned to Sydney in 1836 and rejoined parents at Parramatta. Obtained pastoral experience on stations in Murrumbidgee and Port Phillip Districts from 1837 until 1840. Surveyed the road from Gloucester to New England. Joined Australian Agricultural Company in 1842 in charge of horse and cattle studs at Stroud. Manager of Goonoo Goonoo station near Tamworth from 1854 to c.1880. Trustee of Australian Museum 1881 - 1904. Member of Aborigines Protection Board 1883 - 1904. President of Australia Club
