Qualifications, occupations and interests
Merchant, pastoralist, company director and author. Well educated. Became a trader and visited England in 1844. Acquired squatting interests. Traded on own from 1862 until 1865. Firm became agents for Aberdeen Clipper Line. By 1855 was a Director of Bank of Australasia. Director of New South Wales Marine Insurance Company. Held property on Darling Downs. Director of Australian Gaslight Company. Moruya Silver Mining Company. Tomago Coal Mining Company. Glanmire Gold Mining Company. On Committee of Chamber of Commerce in 1856. Chairman from 1866 until 1869. 1874 until 1875. Free Trade Association in 1865. Wrote one of the first books of economic theory published in Australia, 'A Catechism of the Rudiments of Political Economy', and wrote pamphlets on free trade. He translated French novels and in 1847 wrote the libretto for Isaac Nathan's opera 'Don John of Austria'.
