Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist and stock breeder. Sound general and commercial education. Arrived in New South Wales in September 1820, to bringing merchandise which was sold profitably. Took up a 2,000 acre grant at Saltram, near Bathurst. Established Coombing Park Estate, near estate of Carcoar in 1831 and built the property up to 26,000 acres by 1839. Noted breeder of sheep, cattle and horses (including racehorces). Built large stores, cheese factory and foundry; mined for copper and gold on the property. Principally was a landowner but held squatting interests. Shareholder of the Bank of Australia, Trusteee of the savings Bank of New South Wales in 1844. Leading Anglican. Assisted to build St Pauls, Carcoar.
