Educated at Lithgow High School and Technical College; builder; worked in father's timberyard, Lithgow, in which he gained a part interest in 1944, controlling an interest in 1947, trading as G.Coates and Sons Pty Ltd, managing director; president of Lithgow and District Show Society from 1960; foundation president of Lithgow Aged Peoples Association from 1956; member of Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies advisory committee of New South Wales from 1957 until 1965, Library Board from 1956 until 1965, New South Wales State Planning Authority from 1964 until 1974, of Development Corporation of New South Wales from 1966; president of Hartley District Boy Scouts Association; member of Lithgow Technical College. Rotarian.
