Educated in Chapel Street public school, Marrickville; worked on father's returned serviceman's block, Tarcutta, and following his death, held various positions in New South Wales and Queensland until after the depression; later in business, manufacturing electrical and storage batteries and of chemicals; importer; property and building; pig stud and beef cattle; also broker and financier; foundation president of Marrickville Businessmen's Club and of Day Nursery and Kindergarten, Marrickville; founded Marrickville Girls Club and Marrickville Boys Club; trustee of the Royal National Park, president of Durras Park Trust; delegate to Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Canberra in 1859.
