Educated at St Benedict's School; paper seller, dock hand, blacksmith striker; employed McDonald's softgoods firm, York Street from c.1910 to late 1920s; opened a store in Auburn which rented in 1930 and later sold; after Parliament defeated a traveller for the Egg Board until retirement in 1963; member of the Federated Storeman and Packers Union from 1911 until 1930, of Federated Clerks from 1930 until 1950, president and secretary of Travellers' Guild from 1950 until 1958; secretary of Auburn branch, president of Nepean, Reid and Parramatta federal electorate councils.

Son of Richard Byrne, blacksmith, and Mary Ann Carew. Married Hilda May Winger on 26 January 1918 and had issue, 2 daughters and 1 son. Buried at North Rocks Cemetery from St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Parramatta.
