Qualifications, occupations and interests
Master butcher and hotel proprieter. Educated at Lismore public school; worked at bush jobs from age 14; and in a warehouse in Sydney. Spent several years in South Africa; went to the Western Australian goldfields; returned to Sydney; established a chain of butcher shops. Acquired a string of racehorses and hotel property, including Hotel Gollan, Lismore; travelled overseas from 1924 until 1926, retired from active business in 1939; chairman of directors of New South Wales. Board of Equitable Probate and General Insurance Company Limited; director of Five Ways Theatres Limited; member of Australian Jockey Club in c.1918, life member; trustee of Randwick racecourse; helped establish Sydney Turf Club; deputy chairman of Prince Henry Hospital; councillor of University of New South Wales from 1953 until 1962
