Educated at Paddington public school and Fort Street High schools, and teachers' training college; teacher with Department of Education in Sydney from 1900 until 1905, Golgolgon and Tarcoon from 1905 until 1908, Alma then Broken Hill from 1908 until 1910; transferred to Goulburn following public statements condemning mine owners' 1909 lockout; at Howell, Wickham and Burwood from 1910 until 1915; returned to teaching at Carrington from 1919 until 1920; foundation member of Parents and Citizens' Association; member of Teachers' Federation until ineligible in 1920; member of Australian Industrial Christian Fellowship Council in 1923
Military Service
Served in Australian Infantry Forces from 1916 until 1919, 35th Battalion, Major, Distinguished Service Order 1917, Military Cross 1916 and bar 1917, mentioned in despatches twice.
