8121 - JOHN HUNTER HOSPITAL COMPENSATION CLAIMS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health, and Minister for Medical Research
  1. Considering that John Hunter Hospital paid out $2,379,063 in compensation in the 2016-17 financial year, the most of any hospital in the state, is NSW Health investigating why the hospital's liability was so high?

    1. If so, what steps is the department taking to reduce outcomes that lead to this liability?

Answer -

Compensation claims can be lodged and payments made years after an event occurs, meaning claims resolved in a particular financial year do not indicate the number or seriousness of incidents which occurred in that particular year.
