Suspend and remove the draft music and drama syllabuses from circulation and restart the review process with improved policy safeguards

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Committee Members of the Australian Society for Music Education NSW Chapter and Drama NSW stand united alongside the undersigned petitioners to bring to the attention of the House the proposed changes to the Music and Drama 11-12 curriculum. On the 28th of October, The New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) released drafts of the Music 1 11-12, Music 2 11-12, Music Extension 11-12, Music Life Skills 11-12, Drama 11-12, and Drama Life Skills 11-12 syllabuses. We view the release of these syllabuses as a significant backward step and not representing the values of our members. If not addressed with additional policy safeguards, we forecast a significant decrease in enrolments for Music and Drama courses, leading to ongoing implications for our state’s artistic voice and the arts economy. The petitioners therefore request that the Legislative Assembly call on the Government: 1. For an immediate suspension and removal of the draft Music and Drama 11-12 Syllabuses from circulation. 2. Advocate for a new review process to commence following the release of the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry Report on Arts and Music Education and Training. 3. Ensure the new review process is: a) Transparent b) Genuinely consultative with Music and Drama educators and stakeholders c) In alignment with leading and international Music and Drama curricula and research
