To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, To the Honourable the Speaker and members of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales.
This Petition of citizens of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House the fact that the NSW housing system is broken. The private rental market is insecure and so expensive that many ordinary people simply cannot afford a place to live. People are waiting ten years to access public housing. When they do finally get offered a home, they are poorly maintained - many are so poorly maintained that they are barely habitable. The Government still charges people rent for homes that are so poorly maintained they are unsafe to live in. We need more investment in public, social and affordable housing. We need better protections for renters. We need all levels of government – local, state and federal - to work together to ensure everyone has a safe, secure, affordable, and habitable place to call home.
The undersigned petitioners ask the Legislative Assembly to:
- Commit to a Housing First approach to homelessness;
- Significantly increase investment in public and social housing – building new properties and maintaining existing stock;
- Support local government to mandate affordable housing and develop affordable housing initiatives;
- Protect renters rights and end unfair no-grounds evictions;
- Urge the Federal Government to phase out unfair tax rules, including reforming negative gearing and the capital gains tax.
