Fair Funding for Lawson Public School

Petitioner: Mr Tom Walters | Member: Doyle, Trish | No. of Signatories: 606 | Date closed: 22/11/2024
To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Members of the NSW Teachers Federation (NSWTF) at Lawson Public School urge the NSW Government to direct the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) to continue centrally funding an additional teacher and Student Learning and Support Officer (SLSO) at Lawson Public School (LPS). In Term 4, 2023 the DET granted funding for an additional teacher and SLSO for the First Semester of 2024, after NSWTF members wrote to the Minister for Education and Early Learning and Secretary of the DET, raising the matter of urgently needed additional support for the school. The DET recognised the need for one additional teacher and a SLSO. The need remains, however, the DET has not renewed funding for Semester 2. The school appealed this decision and bore the cost of those 2 positions for the duration of the appeal, which was ultimately unsuccessful. This has seriously depleted school funds earmarked for other purposes such as technology to support student learning, air conditioning in classrooms and shaded play spaces. We ask the Legislative Assembly to urge the Government to direct the DET to reimburse the school for funds expended during the appeal and to continue to fund these positions at LPS until the end of 2024 and for as long as the need exists.
