To commemorate the Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council, a unique music composition was commissioned in partnership with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This special composition honours two centuries of parliamentary governance in New South Wales, encapsulating the Bicentenary theme of Reflect, Celebrate, Imagine.
Composed by talented students from the Conservatorium (pictured below, top right), the piece consists of three distinct and evocative movements, capturing the spirit of the Bicentenary.
Rhys Owen – The Striving Spirit
Tullia Cairns – Acknowledgement of Country, Gadigal
The first movement The Striving Spirit seeks to encourage reflection upon the Council’s evolution through rhythmic dynamism and overlapping melodies. The jubilant guzheng and string instruments sounds of In G celebrates the colourful nature of our modern Upper House. Finally, Acknowledgement of Country, Gadigal powerfully merges instrumental sounds with voice to pay ongoing tribute to the Aboriginal land on which NSW Parliament meets.
The premiere performance of the Bicentenary Music Composition was enjoyed by members of the public attending our Open House event on 25 August 2024, held at the Parliament of NSW to mark 200 days years to the day of the Legislative Council’s first ever meeting.
The three movements were again performed at the Bicentenary Exhibition Launch on 20 October, attended by His Majesty King Charles III, and at the Opening Ceremony for the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Sydney in November 2024.
President of the NSW Legislative Council, Ben Franklin said, "This composition is a testament to the creativity and talent of our young musicians, and it beautifully reflects the themes of our Bicentenary – Reflect, Celebrate, Imagine. It is a fitting tribute to our past and an inspiring vision for our future."
The ‘Making of the Music Composition’ documentary will be available soon, offering a closer look at how this remarkable composition came to life.
