On Sunday 25 August— 200 years to the day since the Legislative Council's first ever meeting — the Parliament of NSW threw open our doors for a special Open House. Thousands of members of the public and the Parliamentary community (past and present) joined in the festivities to mark this momentous milestone.
The day began with a moving Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony in the forecourt. Visitors of all ages were invited to explore our iconic building and learn more about its heritage architecture and history.
The atmosphere was energetic with live music and a diverse program, from exhibitions and historian-led talks to chamber tours and historical re-enactments. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music performed the world premiere of a music composition 'Reflect. Celebrate. Imagine', prepared especially for the Bicentenary. Families got involved in arts and crafts and a children's activity trail around the precinct. There was also delicious food to enjoy, from democracy sausages in the Speaker's Garden to a Bicentenary high tea in the Members' Dining Room.
A standout moment of the day was the state final of the inaugural NSW Parliament Regional Public Speaking Competition. Sophia Huckel of Blue Mountains Grammar School (winner of the Bathurst regional round) took home victory, captivating the audience with her passionate and moving speeches in the prepared and impromptu rounds.
Open House was a fantastic event that drew many new and diverse audiences to Parliament, giving them the opportunity to learn more about us and how they can actively participate in our democracy.
