Community activity
Commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in 1892; Knight of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1920. President of Adelaide Chamber of Commerce in 1887. Sydney Chamber of Commerce from 1896 until 1898. Assisted to found New South Wales Chamber of Manufactures in 1895.

Merchant and Company Director. Arrived in Melbourne in April 1854. Educated at St James Grammar in Melbourne. Entered business and in 1878 became a department manager with firm of Gibbs, Bright & Co., merchants and later became a partner. Opened a branch in Adelaide and moved to Sydney. became a resident partner in in 1888 and retired in 1929. Director of National Bank of Australasia; Director of the Australian Mutual Provident Society 1889 until 1932; Chairman from 1906 until 1932; Chairman Lysaght Brothers and Co.
