Qualifications, occupations and interests
Businessman. Around 1840 he joined with his brother-in-law, John Betts (who had married his sister, Margaret Erskine Panton) to set up the the mercantile firm of Betts & Panton of Windsor and Sydney. He moved to Brisbane in the then Moreton Bay District of New South Wales, establishing the firm of Panton & Co. in Brisbane Street. He was a pioneer of the cotton industry in Queensland. Born a Presbyterian, he later became a member of the Church of England. He died at his house 'Clermont' in Ipswich.
