Qualifications, occupations and interests
Landed proprieter and Company Director. By 1837 had an estate near Maitland in Hunter River district. In 1838 he took 21 Scottish immigrant families onto the estate as tenant farmers. Purchased land at Illawarra and introduced flood prevention works. In 1858 had 300 - 400 acres of drained land under cultivation and also had a vineyard. Chairman of the Board of the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company. Signed a petition to import coolies in 1842.
