Educated at Deniliquin Intermediate and night study; joined Postmaster General's Department in 1917 as a messenger boy and later a telegraphist; took over as a licensee of family's Edward River Hotel at Deniliquin in c.1926; after parliamentary defeat, employed in New South Wales Department of Labour and Industry from 1933 until 1935; private secretary to to Hon E.J Ward from 1941 until 1947; secretary of Australian delegation to International Labour Organisation conference in Geneva in 1947; Commonwealth Conciliation Commissioner from 1947 until 1956, retired; director of Deniliquin Hospital Board; secretary of Deniliquin Athletics Club and Deniliquin Licensed Victuallers Race Club from 1926 until 1930
