Notes: The by-election was caused by the resignation of J.G.Arthur, who had been found guilty by a Royal Commission of improper conduct in a business relationship with notorious confidence man Reginal Doyle. After the Royal Commission's finding, Arthur was expelled from the Labor Party rather than allowed to resign. (Newcastle Morning Herald, 22 August 1953, p.1) As a snub to the Labor Party, local party branches pre-selected Artur's father, also called Joshua. (Newcastle Morning Herald, 24 August, p.1) Note in this article, Arthur senior refers to having contested Newcastle in the multi-member period of the 1920s, but he must have meant he contested party pre-selection.
