Notes: George Cann had been elected MHR for Nepean in 1910, contesting this seat after his defeat at the May 1913 Commonwealth election. He was the brother of Labor MP for Sturt JH Cann. After defeat here, George Cann was elected to the Legislative Assembly representing Canterbury at an October 1914 by-election. Sitting MP Willis had controversially been made Speaker by the Labor government in 1911, earning the enmity of the Liberal Party. Willis described himself as a 'Radical Liberal', but the affiliation Independent Liberal has been adopted here. Abbott also received the endorsement of the Liberal Party.
