Cause Category: Ministerial by-election
Notes: By-election on the formation of the Carruthers Ministry. Hogue had expected to be elected unopposed. At the last moment, a nomination was received from Vincent Patrick Taylor, who had recently received 3 votes contesting Sydney City Council's Belmore Ward. The SMH reported the nominations as being read out before 'one man and the proverbial dog'. Given the cost of holding a poll, Hogue expressed unhappiness at being challenged by such a low profile opponent. The SMH went as far as describing Taylor as being so low profile he could be considered a vexatious opponent. (SMH 7 September 1904, p.7 col.6)
