Notes: Black was a sitting MP for West Sydney. He was one of the re-elected non-solidarity Labor candidates listed by Bede Nairn in 'Civilising Capitalism', (p120 and footnote). He later re-joined the Labor Party. He is not listed as a Labor candidate in the SMH list of selected candidates (16 July), is listed by the Worker as a Labor candidate until 30 June and then a modified pledge Labor candidate in the Brisbane Worker 7 July, and is clealry listed as Independent Labor in the Australian Workman, the affiliation adopted here. Black's victory was challenged by O'Connor on the basis Black was not entitled to a electors right. Hearings were held by the Elections and Qualifications Committee examining Black's normal place of abode. (LAVP 1894-5, Vol.1 p.965)
