Notes: The SMH listed Kennedy as an 'Opposition' candidate, but the Telgraph reported him as a Protectionist Labor candidate with the close of nominations (18 June 1891, p.6 col.8) and as a defeated Labor candidate in its election summary, 4 July, p.9 col.1. The Australian Star listed him as a Protectionist, and his address to the electors published in the Kiama Independent 9 June, p.3 col.3, certainly indicates he is a protectionist rather than a Labor candidate. Given Kennedy contested future elections in Kiama as a Protectionist candidate, on this occasion the Telegraph's affiliation has been ignored.
Source: Report of nominations, Kiama Independent 19 June 1891, p.2 col.4-6, results from Higinbotham and Robinson, Electoral and Political Reference Map of New South Wales, published March 1992. This differs by only a single vote from other sources, but matches the totals in the Statistical Register. Other sources were SMH 20 June 1891, p.10 col.3, including booth details, and Kiama Independent, 23 June, p.2 col.3.
