Notes: MP RP Abbott did not contest. GA Lloyd had already been defeated re-contesting his own seat of Newcastle.
Source: Totals taken from Newcastle Herald, 16 December 1882, p.8. SMH did not get to final figures, though it did show Targett with 298 votes in its final tables of winning candidates. Daily Telegraph 16 December, p.5 col.6 had 115 votes for Hughes and same votes for other candidates as in Newcastle Herald. Given earlier progressive totals, 88 looks the more likely result for Hughes. Australian Town and Country Journal also reported the Telegraph totals, 23 December 1882, p.1236 col.4. Totals re-printed in the SMH and DT at the time of the 1885 election were even more inaccurate.
