Notes: In the report of the nominations (SMH 30 October, p.5 col.6) it was asserted that the nomination of Parkes was a sham. One Elector suggested nomination deposits should be introduced. The report went on 'Indignation is expressed at the nomination of Sir Henry Parkes as it was done only with a view to receive the money usually spent on a contested election, and for this purpose Sir Henry's name has been made use of.' Parkes is not shown as a sitting MP, having already been elected for Canterbury.
