Notes: The Elections and Qualifications Committee found that Thomas Brown owned a coal mine and had a contract with a Mr Pitt which allowed Mr Pitt to take coal from the mine. Mr Pitt in turn had a contract with the government for the supply of rail engine coal. The Committee concluded that Mr Brown had an interest in Mr Pitt's contract with the government and that his seat was therefore vacated even though there was no contract between Mr Brown and the Government. (Twomey p.415, also LAVP, 1875-76, Vol A1 p.777) The report of nominations also mentioned Harold H W Stephen as being nominated, but he never appeared in any of the published results.
