Cause Category: Ministerial by-election
Notes: By-election caused by the appointment of J B Darvall as Attorney General in the third Cowper ministry. The by-election was used by Henry Parkes in an attempt to resurrect his Parliamentary career. Having been one of the Parliament's more conservative MP, Darvall's decision to join the liberal Cowper government was criticised. He wrote to Parkes criticising his decision to contest the ministerial by-election, pointing out the colony must have an Attorney-General. After his victory, Parkes accused his opponent and friend of soliciting for votes 'with the electoral roll in the right hand and the grog bottle in the left'. (Taken from ADB entry for Darvall)
