Source: SMH 7 January 1862, p. 5. col. 4 which reports tham as the DOP. The Bathurst Free Press, 9 January, p. 2, col. 5 also claims to report the DOP but gives the result Ryan 219, Martin 190. The SMH has been presumed to be the more reliable source as it provides more detail in breaking down the result by polling districts, and also matches the record of votes in the Statistical Register (1860). The Register reports 433 votes exclusive of 5 informal, but on the basis of the newspaper results, has been modified to be inclusive.
