Notes: Robert Tooth had been defeated on the 13th in Sydney Hamlets, only entering the field for Sydney City at the close of nominations on the 14th.
Source: SMH 19 January 1858, p.3 col.3, including results by ward and a total of persons voting. Attention should be drawn to a table published SMH 27 March, p.5 col.6, which broke down the details of the election against the state of the roll. Two discrepencies in this table should be noted. First, a slightly different enrolment figure is used, but it is impossible to reconcile enrolments in this period. Second, the total of persons voting by ward adds to 5,303, the figure published on 19 January, not the 5,393 published as the total of the column.
