Notes: Sitting MP and former Premier Henry Watson Parker did not re-contest. According to his ADB entry, in 1858 he was knighted and returned to England. James Byrnes was a sitting MP for Cumberland (South Riding) and James Pye a sitting MP for Cumberland (North Riding). Pye lodged a petition against the election of Oakes claiming supporters had been intimidated against voting. The petition was dismissed as unproved, Elections and Qualifications Committee report, LAVP 1858, Vol A1 p.839.
