Notes: The losing candidate was variously referred to in the Sydney papers as W M Dorsey, W M Dorsay and finally Dr M T D'Orsay. The Moreton Bay Courier referred to Dr Dorsey in the report of nominations, 5 April 1856, p.3 col.1-2, while his name was clearly published in advertising ahead of the poll in the North Australian and Ipswich General Advertiser. Dorsey was an early Moreton Bay settler, though his ADB entry does not indicate he contested the election.
Source: Moreton Bay Courier, 15 April, supplement p.1 col.4, including booth details, totals matching the reported number of persons voting in the Blue Book. Same totals were repeated with incorrect names in the Empire, 21 April 1856, p.5 col.4. SMH election summary 30 April, p.5 col.1 publishes slightly different totals, 304 / 96, and the North Australian Ipswich and General Advertiser reports 305 / 96.
