Qualifications, occupations and interests
Pastoralist. Left school to work on the family farm at Richmond and managed the farm himself from 1825 to 1832. Received a grant of 2000 acres on the Talbragar River in 1825 and leased an additional 4000 acres. Purchased 5200 acres at Dunn's Plains, Bathurst around 1832 and gradually enlarged the property. Introduced farm labourers from England and vignerons from Germany to work on his properties. Experimented with the export of salt beef for Calcutta in Bengal, India.
Personal
Second son of John Bowman, pioneer settler from East Lothian in Scotland, and his wife Honor Honey, from Cornwall. Educated at Windsor Public School from 1811- 1813. Married Elizabeth Arthur in North Shields, England, in 1837 and had issue 1 son. Church of England.
