Miner and railway clerk; at age twelve worked in the mines; arrived in New South Wales in 1911, worked as a miner at Cessnock; after passing the entrance examination in New South Wales railways in 1913, porter, later became a clerk in Sydney and Thirroul; foundation secretary of Thirroul branch of Australian Railways Union.

Son of Alexander Kelly, coachman, and Martha Borthwick. Married Mary Mackay on 28 April 1911 and had issue, 2 daughters and 1 son. Bulli Presbyterian cemetery.
